Since the launch of the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B single-board computer, there are many enclosure or case for it. I like this particularly because it is lightweight, made with ABS, easy to assemble (no screw needed, just snap and fit) and it comes with cooling fan (requires 4 easy mounting screws) because the Raspberry Pi 4B need it :)
We love this case since the version for Raspberry Pi 3B and 3B+, now it's finally being updated to be compatible with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B board. And it takes the cooling into consideration.
The case comes in three main parts so you can snap on (no screw). There is a base plane, where you should place the Raspberry Pi 4 board (remove the microSD card first), the middle part which is a rectangular shape part that has opening for connectors (USB ports, Ethernet port, micro HDMI, USB Type C, Audio/Vidoe jack, etc) and partial of the top side; and the last part is the top cover with an opening and mounting holes for cooling fan. The user is free to remove the top cover and access to the connectors of the camera, display, and GPIO.
This case's smart design and customizability make it a worthy addition to the Pi case genre! The opening allows additional heatsink for the processor, RAM and USB controller:
Note: This product is just the case. It does not come with Raspberry Pi or heatsinks.
Note: The gap between the top cover and middle part is purposely designed to allow airflow for ventilation and cable (GPIO, Camera, Display) access.
The cooling fan will require mounting with the screws and nuts provided and connect the connector to Pin 4 (Red to 5V) and Pin 6 (Black to GND) as shown in the picture:
We have done the stress test on Raspberry Pi 4 Model B 4GB board. The test is carried out to compare the temperature performance of the Raspberry Pi 4 with this nice ABS case, Fan ON and Fan Off. This is just one of the many methods you can use to benchmark the thermal performance of the enclosure or heatsink. The test consists of two parts which are cooling and continue with stress test. The stress test loads the CPU to 100% and logs the temperature. We have also updated the EEPROM firmware of Raspberry Pi 4 Model B to 000137ad (date: 10 Sep 2019), the thermal performance improved significantly:
As you can see from the chart, the cooling fan plays an important role in keeping the Raspberry Pi cool :) So make sure the fan is there and working if you like this enclosure/case.
