15 Nov 2018: Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ is released! And now we carry it.
Yeah! We love Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+ because of its wireless capabilities and quad-core 64-bit processor. On the other hand, we also love the low cost and compact size of Raspberry Pi Zero W. But in case you are looking for a Raspberry Pi that sits in between these two variations, you will love Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+. Lower cost with wireless capability, same processor as 3B+ yet PCB size is smaller than Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. This is the perfect board for education because you do not need 4 USB ports and since WiFi is there, Ethernet socket (RJ45) can be taken out too.
The new Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ has a 64-bit quad-core processor clocked at 1.4GHz, 512MB of RAM, fast dual-band 802.11 b/g/n/ac wireless LAN, and Bluetooth 4.2.
Get the power of Raspberry Pi 3 B+ at a lower cost and smaller size!
The 3A+ looks like a down grade from 3B+, but A+ is designed for different segments of application. If you are doing robotics that requires high processing power but do not need USB or Ethernet connection, it fits right in.
Of course, we should also compare with the previous Raspberry Pi 1 A+ that has a single-core 700MHz CPU (same as Raspberry Pi 1). Now with the addition of the quad-core 1.4GHz BCM2837 SoC with improved thermals to the Pi 3 A+ gives a huge performance boost. The VideoCore is clocked at 400MHz for video processing and the 3D graphics processor runs at 300MHz. And not to forget, you can now have Internet connection via the dual-band WiFi on 3A+ while 1A+ does not offer WiFi connection.
And do you know? With the ARMv8 processor, it can now run the full range of ARM GNU/Linux distributions, including Snappy Ubuntu Core, as well as Microsoft Windows 10 IoT edition.
The Pi 3 A+ now has not just wireless, but FAST wireless! It's the same fast, dual-band wireless chip (CYW43455) as the Pi 3 B+, with 802.11 b/g/n/ac wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.2. The dual-band 2.4GHz and 5GHz wireless LAN enables faster networking with less interference (although the higher bandwidth has less range), and the new PCB antenna technology should allow better reception.
Bluetooth allows you to use a wireless keyboard/trackpad without extra dongles, keeping things nice and tidy, also save the USB port for other purposes.
The GPIO header remains the same as the previous A+ (and the Pi 3 B+ and Zero / Zero W/ Zero WH), with 40 pins. Be aware that the new metal shielding on the wireless circuitry and the SoC may cause shorts against larger components on the underside of HATs, pHATs, and SHIMs. In the first two cases, standoffs will help; in the latter, a couple of small pieces of insulating tape or Kapton tape will prevent any shorts.
It works great with the HATs and pHATs. And we will carry the official Raspberry Pi 3 Model A+ case from Raspberry Pi Foundation when it is available for Malaysia. Of course, we will also source for other nice case :)
Note: Both the 5V 2.5 A micro B power adapter and 5V 3A micro B power adapter works great with the Pi 3 Model B+ and provides plenty of power to the chip, Ethernet, and any USB add-ons you plug in. But you are doing industry projects that need stable and certified power supply, get the official power adapter from Raspberry Pi, 5.1V 2.5A power adapter.
You'll need the latest NOOBS image for the Wireless LAN and Bluetooth drivers to be installed. We do carry a pre-imaged NOOBS microSD card (depending on the NOOBS version, might need to update) from Raspberry Pi Foundation.
