Description

Note: For limited quantity and time, Phidisk PhantomKnight M.2 SATA III SSD is upgraded to 480GB!

Note: This kit includes USB3.0 SATA Shield, metal caseand Phidisk PhantomKnight 120GB 480GB M.2 SATA III SSD

Combining with the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B board, it can be your NAS (Network Attached Storage), Media Server, or simple local cloud server in your home. Or maybe you just want to boot your huge Retropie image from SSD, SSD offers cheaper memory and faster booting time compared to MicroSD.

Yes, even booting Raspberry Pi OS from SSD (Phidisk PhantomKnight II) is much faster than the microSD card that we have. Here is the diagnostic result that we get using Raspberry Pi Diagnostics:

  • Sequential write speed 300623 KB/sec (target 10000) - PASS, 30 times faster than the target
  • Random write speed 11636 IOPS (target 500) - PASS, nearly 24 times faster than the target
  • Random read speed 10915 (target 1500) - PASS, nearly 8 times faster than the target

If we compare with 128GB microSD(Phidisk):

  • Sequential Write: microSD is ~27MB/S, Phidisk SSD is 300MB/S. SSD is more than 10X faster than microSD
  • Random IOPS - Write: microSD is ~1000 IOPS, Phidisk SSD is ~11000 IOPS. SSD is more than 11X faster than microSD
  • Random IOPS - Read: microSD is ~2300 IOPS, Phidisk SSD is ~10000 IOPS. SSD is more than 4X faster than microSD

Note: Raspberry Pi Diagnosis result depends on many factors (New memory or used memory, interface, SATA interface, USB interface, USB cable, etc). It should be taken as a reference only.

The M.2 NGFF SATA SSD Shield for Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, it provides a complete storage solution for the most powerful Raspberry Pi board. It supports multiple M.2 NGFF SSD lengths including 2280, 2260, 2242, 2230.

Note: This is meant for the Raspberry Pi 4B mainboard only as of the placement of USB 3.0 port.

We have tested this expansion board with Phidisk PhantomKnight 120GB and 480GB M.2 SATA III.

This M.2 2280 PhantomKnightII SSD from Phidisk apparently has a maximum sequential read and write speed of up to 560MB/s and 500MB/s respectively. The above results are limited by the USB3.0 to SATA interface. With Windows and Linux OS booting features, it consumes low power and heat. However, it can endure high temperatures, from 0°C up to 70°C. The SSD SATA also can endure shock and vibration.

Note: The Phidisk PhantomKnight II 2.5" SSD SATA III drive is PRE-LOADED with the Raspberry Pi OS and Pre-installed on the M.2 shield (during promotion only) so you can use it with Raspberry Pi 4 Model B right out of the box (if the Raspberry Pi 4B is ready with USB boot).

The Raspberry Pi 4B is configured to boot over the USB port and manage to get amazing data access speed through this board.

Notes:

  • A microSD card is REQUIRED for forcing the Raspbian OS to use the HDD/SSD for its "root" partition.
  • Compatible with M.2 NGFF SATA SSDs only, NOT compatible with NVMe M.2 SSDs.
  • As with all SSDs, new media must be formatted before use.
  • SSDs that use exceptionally high-performance storage media will run hot when under load.
  • Older SSD drives with less efficient flash media may not perform as well as newer drives.

Not sure your Raspberry Pi 4B is ready for USB boot? Check these steps out:

Option 1: Do it from Raspberry Pi OS desktop with a monitor, keyboard, and mouse, going into the raspi_config, by leepspvideo:

Option 2: Format a blank microSD card (you need to back up in case you have only one microSD card) into FAT32, load the RPi4 EEPROM firmware using Raspberry Pi Imager(download from here). From Operating System->Misc Utility Images->Raspberry Pi 4 EEPROM boot recovery, choose your microSD card and load the image into it:

After the Raspberry Pi Imager loaded the EEPROM firmware into the microSD card, insert it into your Raspberry Pi 4B microSD card slot and power it up. After just 3 seconds, the EEPROM is updated with new firmware and it is ready for USB boot.

Option 3: Boot it directly if your Raspberry Pi 4B comes with the latest firmware in the EEPROM, nothing needed to be updated :)

A metal case is also included in the kit. It is a perfect metal case with a power control switch and super low noise cooling fan for the Raspberry Pi 4 Model B and the M.2 NGFF/SATA SSD Shield. It supports the Power Management and UPS HAT installation for intelligent power management and cooling your Raspberry Pi, also supports battery holder installation for UPS function (U100) too. The equipped cooling fan is installed on the side of the battery holder to provide better heat dissipation.
