Description

PETGs (or copolyester) are glycol-modified PETs; the modification is done by adding a second glycol during polymerization. The resulting molecular structure is irregular and the resin is clear and amorphous with a higher glass transition temperature of 88 C (190 F). PETGs can be processed over a wider processing range than conventional PETs and offer a good combination of properties such as toughness, clarity, and stiffness.

PETG filament is an extra tough 3D print material. This is an extremely high strength filament and can achieve very sturdy and strong prints. It has very low shrinkage, making this perfect for larger flat surfaces. PETG is a perfect alternative to ABS and PLA, offering higher strength, lower shrinkage, and a smoother finish.

Some interesting facts about PETG:

  • PETG is short for polyethylene terephthalate glycol-modified.
  • PETG is the perfect filament to combine strength and ductility, which is why it’s used in so many mechanical parts and robotics.
  • It has great chemical resistance with good water, acidic, and alkalic resistance.
  • PETG also makes great material for artistic prints like bracelets, rings, collars, etc..

Let's check out what Thomas Sanladerer talks about PETG filament, and some settings for your 3D printer to print this filament:

In short, if the physical properties of the filament are a high priority for your 3D printing application, PETG would be the first to explore. If, on the other hand, an exact and very good aesthetic is required for your project to hit the bullseye, you should probably go for PLA.

This spool of PETG filament comes in 1 kilogram and it is sufficient for most of you to print many interesting 3D parts. Enjoy printing it.

PETG filament is hygroscopic, just like PLA and TPU too. In case you do not know, filaments absorb water vapour or moisture in the air? They do, sadly. It can affect the printing quality if the filament stored in a humid place. Humid conditions and UV light speed up the breakdown of the filament which weakens it and causes inconsistent or poor quality prints. For example, when water is absorbed by the filament and it is heated by the 3D printer for extrusion, the water combined with heat makes steam (you will hear a hissing sound as steam is created). This causes the filament to bubble as it comes out of the hot end and leaves you with an inconsistent surface on your print. To counter this problem, this PETG filament is vacuum-sealed and a bag of desiccant silica gel is placed inside it so that it can absorb remaining water vapour. The main purpose is so that the filament will always in a dry state.

Check out the advice from 3DMN on printing PETG:

Note: PETG filament absorbs moisture or water vapour in the air too, so it should be kept in an airtight container and cold condition after it is opened. And please includes the silica gel to absorb moisture/humidity in the container. If it is not kept in dry and proper conditions, it will cause a lot of problems, before and during printing. Besides keeping in the proper conditions, we recommend using the PETG filament within 6 months after you open the seal. Do check the article on 3D printer filaments storage by 3DPrintingForBeginner
